Stop Arguing When Your Wife Says "You Always" or "You Never"

When your wife says you "never" listen or "always" forget, she's wrong. And she knows it. She's not telling you what she really thinks the facts are. She's telling you how much this hurts.

Stop Arguing When Your Wife Says "You Always" or "You Never"

Neither of you actually believes that you "never help" is true.

You know you've helped before. She knows that also. Right now she's not detailing your history. She's trying to get across how deeply she's hurting, and extreme language indicates extreme emotion.

Say she tells you, "You never help around the house." Your instinct is to list every load of laundry you did this month in self-defense. That instinct is dangerous. You're answering a claim she didn't mean literally, while ignoring the one she did mean: she feels alone in the work.

Or she says, "You always forget things that matter to me."

Maybe you actually remembered her mom's birthday date last month. Pointing that out proves you're right and misses her completely. What she's saying is that forgetting once felt like proof you don't pay attention to her life.

Arguing the math wins you nothing. Even if you're technically right, you've told her that her feelings need fact-checking before you'll take them seriously. That's a worse message than the one she was actually sending.

The words aren't the point. The hurt is the point.

When you hear "never" or "always," don't correct it. Ask what's really going on instead. That tells her she's safe bringing you her pain, instead of learning she has to defend her word choice before you'll listen.

Next time you hear an absolute, ignore the words, and instead hear what she is saying.

Ready to stop guessing and start following through?

This is exactly what coaching with me is about. Not vague advice about "communicating better." Real, practical follow-through on the things your wife has already told you matter, and the accountability to actually do it.

If you're ready to be the husband who follows through instead of just meaning to, book a free call and let's work out what's next.
